In November, 2018, the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados, led by Professor Anne St. John and Dr. Grace Showan, and supported by Dr. Janelle Bryan, Champion for the Childhood Obesity Prevention Campaign and also Chair of the National Taskforce on Wellness and Member of the National NCD Commission and Mrs. Greta Yearwood, celebrated the launch of ‘school moves’ health clubs at several model schools participating in the ‘Stop! Yuh too Sweet!’ campaign.

An abnormality of the heart is present in about 1% of all babies born. Untreated, half of these affected will die in their first year of life. The survivors do fairly well until adulthood when the less severe forms begin to take their toil. It is usual for persons with uncorrected CAD to survive much beyond age 40.

Barbados Stroke Statistics

Stroke

Around 350 Barbadians suffered a stroke during the first year. Most of these strokes (83%) were due to blockage of a blood vessel supplying the brain. Most strokes occurred over the age of 65 and more women than men were affected.
